MBT Support: Basic Chart Functions 3
If you do not see the Chart Toolbar, it can be accessed by clicking View->Chart Bar.
The first three icons allow you to select the chart type (OHLC, Candlestick, Line). The chart types are discussed in more detail in the next topic. The next three icons let you turn the scale of the selected chart from Log to Auto Scale.
Log Scale
Log Scale means that the price axis is fixed so as you scroll back in time you might have to scroll the chart up and down to see all the activity.
Auto Scale
Auto Scale automatically adjusts the y-axis to make all price data and studies/plugins visible. As you scroll back in time, the price axis will adjust to fit all the activity.
Auto Scale Price Data Only
This is the same as Auto Scale, but it ignores the values of any studies/plugins so they may not be completely visible as you scroll back in time.
Breakout Bars
Breakout Bars paints certain candlesticks a color that stands out from the normal bars. You can change the color for the breakout bars by clicking Chart->Chart Preferences or by right clicking on the chart and selecting Chart Preferences. In the lower left corner there is a dropdown color menu for Neutral Color (for Breakout Mode). A breakout to the upside is defined as the current bar closing above the high of the previous bar. A breakout to the downside is defined as the current bar closing below the low of the previous bar.
Cursor Tracking
Cursor Tracking is a horizontal and vertical crosshair that follows the mouse as it moves over the chart. The color of the cursor can be changed in the chart preferences window.
Cursor Window
The Cursor Window is a small text box that displays chart values as the cursor moves over the chart. Right clicking on the cursor window will display a dialog box that can be used to change the font, the background and foreground color, and for turning on or off the studies included in the chart. It can be moved by clicking and dragging it to a new location.
Snapshot Window
The Snapshot window is like having a mini quote sheet on the chart. The chart below shows a chart with the default Snapshot enabled. The default Snapshot window contains four horizontal fields: Open, High, Low, Close (Last), and Net Percent. It can be moved anywhere on the chart and can be made to have a horizontal or vertical orientation.
The Snapshot window is a mini quote sheet (anything that can be put in a quote sheet can be put in the Snapshot window). In the example below we have added some fields, plugins, and formulas.
Spacing and Width
These four icons on the Chart Toolbar control the Spacing and Width of the bars, candlesticks, or line.
Reset
This button resets the chart to its default spacing and width and returns it to display the most recent activity.
Secondary and Tertiary Charts
The last two icons turn the Secondary and Tertiary overlay charts on and off. These buttons allow you to plot two more symbols on top of the main chart. You define these symbols by right clicking on the chart and selecting Overlay Symbols. This will bring up the dialog box shown in the figure below. You can also create default secondary and tertiary symbols that will show on all charts instead of just the one with which they are associated.
In order to see the secondary and tertiary overlays you need to enable them from the Chart Toolbar. To turn on the secondary overlay, click the button, for the tertiary click the button. Below you should see the chart below of GOOG with the overlay of AAPL. On the right you have the GOOG price axis and on the left the AAPL price axis. Under the title bar in the chart you can see the label "#2: AAPL". You can change the overlay colors by either right clicking on the chart and selecting Overlay Symbols or by right clicking on the chart and selecting Chart Preferences and then the Secondary Chart and Tertiary Chart tabs.
The Overlay preferences allow you to choose the Chart Type, the Bar Width, the colors of the OHLC Bars or Candle Sticks, the Line color, and the Title Color. In our example we changed the Line Color and Title Color for the Secondary Chart to red. There is also a section for controlling where the axis of the secondary symbol will be displayed.

Line Chart
If you click on the Line Chart icon in the chart toolbar, your chart will look like the one below.
Bar or OHLC Chart
The Bar chart, or Open, High, Low, Close (OHLC) chart displays much more information than line charts.
What is unique about the bar chart is that it shows four important data points in each bar.
Open: the opening price of the stock at the beginning of the interval.
High: the highest price the stock reached in the interval.
Low: the lowest price the stock reached in the interval.
Close: the closing or final price of the stock at the end of the interval.
You can see this in the figure below. Each bar represents the price action that occurred during the time interval selected. For example, if you were using a 5-minute interval, one bar would represent the price action from 8:00 AM - 8:05 AM. The top and bottom of the OHLC bar represents the high and low of the price movement during the interval. The horizontal tick on the LEFT represents the opening price of the trading period while the tick on the RIGHT indicates the closing price. If the price opened low and closed higher the bar will be colored blue by default. If the price opened high and closed lower the bar will be colored red by default. The colors can be changed by right clicking on the chart and selecting Chart Preferences. This will open a dialog box that allows you to choose the colors for OHLC Bars.
Candlestick Chart
Candlestick charts are similar to bar charts. They show the open, high, low and close in a more visually appealing way.
The body of the candlestick represents the opening and closing price for the interval. The wicks (vertical shafts above and below the candlestick body) represent the high and the low of the interval. If the price opened low and closed higher the candlestick will be colored white by default. If the price opened high and closed lower the candlestick will be colored red by default. The colors can be changed by right clicking on the chart and selecting Chart Preferences. This will open a dialog box that allows you to choose the colors for Candle Sticks..
Heikin-Ashi Chart
Heikin-Ashi is a type of candlestick chart that uses a modified formula instead of the traditional open/high/low/close. The formula used for Heikin-Ashi is the following:
Close = (Open+High+Low+Close)/4
Open = [Open (previous bar) + Close (previous bar)]/2
High = Max (High,Open,Close)
Low = Min (Low,Open, Close)
The purpose of the Heikin-Ashi chart is to identify the price trend. Candles with no lower shadows occur during a strong uptrend. Candles with no upper shadow occur during a strong downtrend.
The Chart Menu
The Chart menu is accessed by right clicking on the chart or by clicking "Chart" in the menu area of the workspace. It contains many of the functions that are available in the toolbar with the addition of a few others.
The Title Toolbar
By clicking Title Bar, you can toggle on/off the portion of the window that contains the title,sym/inv, minimize, maximize, and close buttons. Below is a chart window with the Title Bar turned on.
The figure below shows the same chart window with the Title Bar turned off.
Axis & Grids
This submenu allows you to choose how many grid lines are shown on the chart and how many labels are shown on each axis.
Color Groups
The Color Groups menu is another way to control the Symbol and Interval settings.
Format
The Format menu allows you to choose whether or not the chart displays leading zeros.

Trade from the Chart
The Desktop Pro gives you the ability to place trades and view positions directly on the chart. In order to use this function, you must first add the order entry to the chart. Do this by right clicking on the chart and selecting "Show Order Entry". You also must choose which order lines will be visible on the chart. Do this by selecting "Order Lines" then checking the desired lines.
Once you have added the order entry you can place trades directly from the chart. The chart below has a red dashed line indicating a long position of 20,000 EUR/USD with a basis of 1.46863. Now, let's suppose we wanted to place a limit order to sell 20,000 EUR/USD at 1.47019. All we have to do is select "Limit" as the order type and then use the Order Entry line to set the limit price. To do this, left click on the Order Entry line to select it (it will become bold when selected). Then drag the line up or down to the desired price. You will notice the price in the Limit Price field in the Order Entry will populate with this price. In this example, we moved the Order Entry line do 1.47019. Then we would click the "Sell EUR/USD" button and the order would be placed.
The chart below has a blue dashed line indicating the Limit Order to sell 20,000 EUR/USD at 1.47019.
Right clicking on an Open Order line will give you the following options:
As you can see, you can change the order and cancel the order from this menu.
You can also change the preferences for the Open Order line.
The color, thickness and style of the Order Entry, Account Position, and Open Order lines can be changed using the Line Preferences (see Chapter 3).
* For details on cancelling an open order, see Chapter 22. For details on closing positions see Chapter 26. For details on the order entry see Chapter 14.
Chart Preferences
The chart preferences window is shown below. Chart Type allows you to choose from Bar, Candle, or Line. You can choose the color for the Chart Background, Grid, Text Color, Filtered Prices, Cursor, OHLC Up and Down Bars, Candle Sticks Up and Down, Neutral color (for breakout Mode), and Line. You can also adjust the Cursor Thickness, the distance of the right margin from the edge. You can choose to Paint Studies on top of Prices and you can customize the Font.
Below is the Secondary and Tertiary Chart tabs of the Chart Preferences. Notice that they are exactly the same. Here you can choose the Chart Type to be Bar, Candle, or Line. You can adjust the Bar Width, the color of the OHLC Up and Down Bars, the Candle Sticks Up and Down, the Line, and the Title. You also have three options for the Axis of the Secondary and Tertiary Chart, which are Merge with Right Axis, Independent Left Axis, or Independent No Axis.
This is the Other tab of the Chart Preferences. Here you choose whether or not to Show Secondary and Tertiary Titles, Use Symbol Name for Title (short title), Include Exchange in Title, and Number Titles.
